Our lab is well equiped with several instruments for various uses, from biomass conversion to catalyst characterization. Below is a summary of our equipment and the person of contact.



Agilent Infinity 1260 HPLC

There are 2 HPLC systems in our lab running independently of each other and both equipped with a DAD for UV-Vis spectrophotometry and a RID for RI measurements. The first system is fitted with a Bio-Rad Aminex HPX-87H column running with acidic mobile phase for the analysis of sugars and organic acids from biomass.


The second system is fitted with a Bio-Rad Aminex HPX-87P column running with neutral mobile phase for the analysis of sugars from biomass. The HPLC cluster is also equipped with an analytical fraction collector which can be switched between either systems.

Micromeritics 3Flex

For the study of material texture by nitrogen physisorption (surface area, pore size, etc) and the study of metal surfaces by chemisorption of small probe molecules such as H2 and CO.

Tuttnauer 2840 EL-D benchtop autoclave with a chamber volume of 28 liters. Capable of liquid or instrument sterilization and high temperature reactions.

Micromeritics Autochem II

The Micromeritics Autochem II 2920 is a fully automated chemisorption analyzer capable of performing pulse chemisorption, temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), desorption (TPD), oxidation (TPO) and reaction analysis. The analyzer is equipped with a TCD and is coupled to a MKS Cirrus 2 Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer enabling a broad range of product analysis.

VWR Mega Star 1.6 bench top centrifuge with TX-400 rotor. This rotor has a max speed of 5000 rpm and has adapters for 15 mL and 50 mL Falcon tubes.

Flow reactors

We currently have 2 continuous flow reactors set up with a max temperature of 900 degrees celsius. They are connected with a variety of inlet gases as well as with a pump for liquid reactions. These reactors can be connected to a GC for online gas product analysis and are fitted with a 200 mL liquid collecting tube. Uses include kinetic studies on catalysts as well as biomass reactions.

FTIR Spectrometer

We have a Perkin Elmer Frontier FTIR spectrometer equipped with DTGS and MCT detectors operating in both transmission or reflectance modes. Air sensitive samples can be studied in a tight Harrick high temperature DRIFT cell and treated in-situ by any gas and under vacuum.

Agilent 7890B GC with FID and TCD

We have 2 GC systems installed in our lab. The first system is equipped with a HP-5 column and a FID. An autosampler allows for automated liquid sample analysis.


The second system contains a HP-PLOT/Q column coupled with a FID and a CarboPLOT P7 column coupled with a TCD for gas product analysis. This GC system also provides online gas analysis for our continuous flow reactor systems.

Agilent 7890B GC with 5977A MSD

The GC-MS contains a HP-5MS UI column with an autosampler, designed for qualitative and quantitative analysis of liquid and gas samples. It can also be coupled to our reactor system for online gas analysis.

Glove Box

MBRAUN UNIlab Pro glovebox with automatic box pressure control capable of attaining less than 1 ppm of oxygen and water.

Eppendorf I26 benchtop incubator shaker which can operate up to 80 degrees Celsius. Includes interchangeble platforms/clamps for test tubes and Erlenmeyer flasks.

Milli-Q Advantage A10 water purification system

Equipped with a Q-POD dispensing unit for easy delivery of ultrapure (Type 1) water.

Muffle furnace

Thermo Scientific Thermolyne benchtop muffle furnace with a max temperature of 1200 degrees Celsius.

Parr reactor 1 L

We have a standing 1 L Parr reactor with electrical heating and water cooling installed. The reactor is made of Hastelloy with a PTFE gasket and has a max temperature of 350 degrees Celsius and a max pressure of 138 bar.

Parr reactors 50 mL & 25 mL

Two identical 50mL Parr reactors are available for use. They are made of Hastelloy and have a PTFE gasket for a max temperature of 350 degrees Celsius and a max pressure of 200 bar.


In addition, we also have a high pressure/temperature 25mL Parr reactor available. The gasket is made of flexible graphite for a max temperature of 500 degrees Celsius and a max pressure of 345 bar.

Rotary evaporator

Heidolph Hei-VAP Advantage rotary evaporator connected to a vacuum pump for reduced pressure, low temperature seperation of liquids.

Synthesis line

This is a Schlenk line for handling materials under inert atmosphere and treatments under vacuum.

UV-Vis Scanning Spectrophotometer

VWR UV-3100PC scanning spectrophotometer equipped with a 4-position cell holder (10 mm path length). This spectrophotometer has a bandwidth of 2 nm and has a range of 190 – 1100 nm.
